Learning and growing in faith is a lifelong process that is enhanced when shared with a faith community. Our adult classes offer a wide variety of study opportunities to assist you in your faith journey. Fellowship with one another is an added blessing. We welcome you to the opportunity to join an adult group study. For information about joining any of these classes, contact the church office. Some classes meet periodically, so check dates carefully.
Adult Study: This group meets at 9:30 in Room 3 to study and discuss "The Next Seven Words of Christ ," facilitated by Mary Houck.
The Word for Adults: This class uses a curriculum called "Faith Link: Connecting Faith and Life as United Methodists," that explores current events as faith questions. The class includes background information and scripture exploration, Methodist theology and understanding. They meet at 9:30am in Room B14, facilitated by the Ringenbachs and others. Newcomers are always welcome!
Faith Parenting: The Faith Parenting Sunday School class will begin a new video series on Sunday, March 30 at 9:30 a.m. The seven-week series is entitled, “Making the Most of Marriage – Building a Relationship That Will Last a Lifetime.” In these videos, Dr. Kevin Lehman is a funny, entertaining speaker who will help us to navigate our marital relationship with practical and proven truths. There is little preparation needed to participate in this class. Come once or every week! Everyone is welcome, with or without a spouse. Questions, contact Lisa Carey 703 239-8550.
New Member Class:
This three part series offers information and Christian fellowship for newcomers, seekers, and explorers. Topics include United Methodist history, What We Believe, Contemporary United Methodists, and more. Classes are led by pastors and meet Sundays at 11:00am in Room 1. These classes are offered periodically throughout the year. You can check the sign up sheet in the entry way or the current bulletin for the latest schedule.

Disciple I: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study is a foundational, 34-week study that meets for 2 ½ hour sessions with a mix of life application, fellowship, and spiritual growth as it covers the entire Bible. This fall (2006) Disciple I will meet:
Tuesday mornings at 10:00 with Rhonda Wells facilitating AND
Thursday evenings at 7:00 with Dan Freeman & Paul Haldeman facilitating. Sign up in the church entryway.
Disciple II: Take the Plunge "Into the Word, in to the World." Disciple II class is an extensive 32-week study of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts, mining what these texts teach us about pride, hospitality, patience, and humility and considering how we are called into ministry in the world around us. You will link Bible study to witness and service in the world and encourage the practice of spiritual disciplines. This fall (2006) it meets Mondays at 7:00 PM starting September 11th, and is led by Kevin Quinley. (Completion of Disciple I is a prerequisite for entering Disciple II.) Signup in the church entryway.
Disciple III: Remember Who You Are. This 32-week study covers the prophets and the letters of Paul. It emphasizes the connection between memory and identity as the people of God and continues the emphasis on servant hood and discipleship. 2007 dates TBD.
Disciple IV:Under the Tree of Life covers the Writings, the Gospel of John, and Revelation over a 32-week period. The class focuses on issues of community and individual life, appealing to senses and emotions through words, images, dance, and music. 2007 dates TBD.
Jesus in the Gospels is a 30-week study that explores the way each Gospel writer presents events and teachings, and the picture of Jesus that emerges from each Gospel. This study carries forward the philosophy and ideals that shaped the Disciple series-- commitment to a long-term, disciplined study. Looking more closely at the Gospel texts, with Mark providing the basic framework, students examine like stories and events described in other Gospels, and their connection to supporting scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments. The class meets at the church Monday evenings at 7:00 pm.
Mary Martha: A small group study for women, this group meets Tuesday mornings from 10:00am-11:30am, and is facilitated by Janet McGuire. Newcomers are warmly welcomed at any time.
Women in Study: A bible study and fellowship for women, this group meets Thursdays from 10:00-11:30am, usually followed by lunch at Spartan’s restaurant. The facilitator is Mary Ruth Giese. Newcomers are welcome at any time during the year.
With Christ in the School of Prayer: Join this study of Andrew Murray’s classic 30-day prayer adventure. Commitment involves daily reading and once-a-week meetings for prayer and discussion. Meeting times are arranged based on the participants' schedules. Contact the church office for more information on current and upcoming dates. (Signups held periodically throughout the year.)
Advent and Lenten Study Groups: Burke United Methodist Church offers a variety of opportunities every Advent and Lenten season, corresponding with the glorious celebrations of Christ's birth and resurrection.
