Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, which began in the early church as a time of final preparation for adults who were to be baptized at Easter. It is an imitation of Jesus’ sojourn in the wilderness for 40 days and nights. The season begins with Ash Wednesday, named for the ashes placed on our foreheads (from burnt palms used the previous year) as a sign of repentance and as a reminder that we are dust and to dust we will return. The liturgical color is purple, which signifies penitence as well as royalty and points to Christ the King.

Lent is a season of reflection and repentance…a good time to consider and examine those things that put distance between God and us and others. Prayer, study of the Scriptures and other spiritual disciplines help this become a time of transformation; a time for seeking the Holy Spirit’s direction on becoming more Christ like, becoming the person God intends us to be.

parking at the Burke School. BUMC shuttle will run 8:00 AM-12:30 PM. There will be no Sunday evening activities. All K-12th grade students will attend Easter Worship with their family.
