BUMC is committed to alleviating hunger and homelessness by providing immediate relief to those who are affected, and by addressing underlying causes through mentoring and social justice advocacy and support.

Loaves & Fishes is the umbrella term for BUMC's many ministries to those in our local area who go hungry.

Operation Food Bag addresses an immediate need by providing food for individuals and families who come to the church seeking assistance. As food costs rise, we are seeing a greater demand for food bags. You can be involved by donating food, or by sorting food and filling bags. Each week a volunteer sorts and shelves donated food, and fills bags with pre-determined ingredients.

Hot Breakfast for the Homeless is a monthly ministry of preparing and delivering breakfast for homeless persons in the Fairfax Circle area, and for families at the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter. Working in coorperation with FACETS, we prepare breakfast burritos for approximately 100 people. You can be involved by donating food for the breakfasts, or by joining us in the church kitchen on the third Sunday of each month at 6:30AM to prepare or deliver food.

Hot Lunch for the Homeless feeds hungry individuals at the Lamb Center on the third Monday of each month. You can be involved by joining the team as they cook at BUMC at 9:30AM each third Monday.

Each week, volunteers glean surplus food from local restaurants and deliver it to the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter. Every Thursday, an abundant supply of food is collected from the Burke Centre Chiplotle and Burke Centre Starbucks and provided to families at the shelter. You can be involved by taking a turn picking up and delivering the food, which takes about two hours.

Sunday Lunch for Rising Hope provides a meal for 50-60 people at Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church on Route 1. Rising Hope serves a community that includes many who are homeless and/or low income. On the second Sunday of each month, at 7:30AM, our team gathers in the church kitchen to prepare casseroles and salad, which we then deliver to Rising Hope. You can be involved by joining the team to cook or deliver the meals. You can also serve Rising Hope by donating food for their food pantry, or serving in their food pantry.

Hypothermia Program     December 11-17, 2011
During one week each winter, BUMC participates in the Hypothermia Prevention Program operated by FACETS (Fairfax Area Community Emergency Transition Services). BUMC provides meals and overnight accommodations to adults experiencing homelessness, who would otherwise be sleeping outdoors. Dozens of BUMC volunteers set up, cook and serve meals, and staff the overnight shifts, offering hospitality and caring fellowship.

Would you like to eat and play games with some of our homeless friends who visit us every year at hypothermia? Our church partners with the Lamb Center homeless drop-in shelter in Fairfax to host a game night there the second Friday of every month from 6:00 to 8:45 pm. It’s lots of fun, and it helps us to build positive relationships in a laid-back environment. We bring food to share potluck-style in large portions, remembering that many of our friends do not have food to bring. Please sign up below or on our clipboard in the entryway.
