Rev. Dr. Larry Buxton, Senior Pastor
How do I live a life of integrity? What’s “the Main Thing”? How can I make my life count for something good? I grew up in an era of air raid drills and nuclear panic, of drug overdoses and Vietnam, and those questions were really Big Ones for me. Life and death. My search took me to a University Religion Department, to a Campus Ministry, to leadership at a church camp, and right back face-to-face with Jesus Christ.
In my encounter with Him I began to hear whispers of a call to ministry. I tried out a year at Yale Divinity School to see what would happen. And it was there (of all places!) that I heard His claim on my life and His summons to serve him in a fresh and powerful way.
A native of Portsmouth VA, Larry has been the Senior Pastor at Burke since 2007. He is a graduate of The University of Virginia, Yale Divinity School, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Larry is a member of the Virginia Conference Board of Ordained Ministry and the Alexandria District Committee on Ordained Ministry and also teaches Preaching at the summer Course of Study at Wesley Theological Seminary. Larry and his wife Beverly, a Leadership Development consultant and trainer, have lived most of their adult lives in Northern Virginia. Their family includes 2 sons: Garrett (married to Carly, both U.Va. graduates) living in Chicago, and Tyler (Virginia Tech graduate) living in Northern Virginia. Larry is that rarity – he roots for both the Hoos and the Hokies. Crazy passions include skydiving, downhill skiing, scuba diving, good food and drink, the history of rock n roll, the Washington Nationals, and travel.
