FOOD INSECURITY: Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger is growing a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies. From the implementation of sustainable community development projects to our meal packaging program that harnesses the passion of local volunteers, we strive to make an impact on hunger by building resilience, self-sufficiency and empowerment in communities worldwide. BUMC has partnered with Rise Against Hunger for more than 10 years -  in 2019, BUMC received an award celebrating packaging a quarter of a million meals.  We will once again pack 20,000 meals as a congregation on Saturday, May 21, 2022 – your donation helps us pay for the supplies to do this.

Every time there is a disaster (storms, wars, fires, displacement and climate change) in this country or elsewhere in the world, United Methodists reach out to help through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). One of the beautiful things about UMCOR is that when you send money in response to a disaster request, ALL of that donation goes directly to the relief effort – none of it gets used for administrative expenses. Instead, one time a year during the UMCOR Sunday (formerly known as One Great Hour of Sharing) campaign, a collection is taken up to fund the administrative costs of the program.

IMMIGRATION: Just Neighbors

Many of the people we work with in the co-op are immigrants and we hear their stories of dealing with the legal issues associated with being an immigrant. Just Neighbors was founded in 1996 by pastors and attorneys of the United Methodist Church to develop a practical response to the legal challenges that low-income immigrants face in the United States. The founders of Just Neighbors recognized the need to assist immigrants of all faiths and nationalities and to treat immigrants with compassion and hospitality.  Just Neighbors partners with other nonprofit organizations, community volunteers, local faith-based groups, and pro bono lawyers that provide services to immigrants. Through its direct and collaborative efforts, Just Neighbors has helped to empower clients and educate the community about current immigration laws and policies.

“Where will my child live when I am gone?”  This is the heartfelt question of Virginia parents of more than 178,000 persons with developmental disabilities in Virginia.   In 1996 in response to this need, the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church created Heart Havens, Inc. to support men and women with developmental disabilities by building and operating group homes throughout Virginia.   Heart Havens offers them a future for their adult child; a future where these adults can live as independently as able in a home with a family atmosphere, a place to live and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment with 24-hour staff support. Everyone is part of the body of Christ. Your gift empowers adults with a developmental disability to be full members of the body both at church and in their communities.

The Covid-19 crisis has an increased impact on those who live paycheck to paycheck and couldn’t stockpile basic needs. And in places like the Yankton Sioux Tribe on the White Swan Reservation in South Dakota, the nearest substantial grocery stores are 60-90 miles away. The community was still recovering from 2019 flooding when they were further compromised by the pandemic.

Through our giving, we celebrate United Methodist Native American Ministries. As we share in community for this and other denominational giving opportunities, our offerings connect us in ways that recognize Christ among us.

Beyond times of crisis, the special offering supports Native American outreach within annual conferences and across the United States, provides seminary scholarships for Native Americans and equips seminary students who honor and celebrate Native American culture in their ministries. In Virginia, this money will fund a camp bringing together Native Americans from across the state and country.
