Donations and Involvement

HOT BREAKFAST FOR THE HOMELESS
Third Sundays
6:45AM

Once a month, in partnership with FACETS, we prepare breakfast burritos and deliver them to homeless persons in the Fairfax Circle area and to the Katherine Hanley Family Shelter. You can get involved by donating food for the breakfasts or joining us in the kitchen.

Donate: juice boxes, milk boxes, Nutri-Grain bars, fruit cups.
Place items in the marked bin in the kitchen.

OPERATION FOOD BAG

Addresses an immediate need by providing food for individuals and families who come to the church seeking assistance. As food costs rise, we are seeing a greater demand for food bags.
Donate: canned fruit, juice boxes, canned or dried beans, small jars of peanut butter or jelly, 1 lb. boxes of pasta or rice, canned meat, breakfast cereal, disposable diapers, and wipes.
Place items in the marked basket in the church entryway.

WEEKEND FOOD BAGS

Last Wednesday of every month during the school year at 6:30

Social workers in neighborhood schools identify kids that they know are food-insufficient.  These children get breakfast and lunch at school, but we worry if they have enough for the weekends. Weekend Food Bags helps fill that need. To volunteer, sign up here.

Items needed (can be dropped in the outside donation box at any time): mac and cheese cups, soup cups, individual serve pasta cups, shelf stable milk, breakfast bars, cheese/cracker packages. Most items are also available on our Amazon wish list.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUNCHIES

ECHO (ECUMENCIAL COMMUNITIES HELPING OTHES)

An ecumenical area support ministry that serves immediate needs not covered by social services in the Burke/Springfield area.  ECHO provides food, clothing, and household goods, job counseling.  We support them financially and through donations of the above items.  We assist at Thanksgiving and Christmas with food baskets and gifts.

Donate: vegetable oil, syrup, juice, laundry detergent, shaving cream, deodorant, pots and pans, queen-sized bedding, men's t-shirts (size small), toilet paper, paper towels. BUMC has collection bins for ECHO in the missions area near the Fellowship Hall for those who have small items to donate, and do not need a receipt. (If you have a large amount to donate, or if you would like a receipt, please take your items directly to ECHO, which is located at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield. ECHO accepts donations weeksdays, 9:30AM-12:30PM, or 7:00-9:00PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.)

LITTLE DRESSES
year round

Sewers of all ages work year-round to make little sundresses and shorts for children in Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Dominican Republic.  Our missionaries take the items with them when they visit each year. Dress and short kits are available on the Missions table outside Fellowship Hall.

HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION PROGRAM
December

For many years, BUMC has participated in the FACETS Hypothermia Prevention program.  Working with 25 other churches, this program provided food and overnight shelter for homeless people from Thanksgiving through Easter.  BUMC hosted the program for a week in December every year. Due to the current pandemic, the county has found a location that can be used for the entire season, and we here at Burke will be providing breakfasts and lunches for the 3rd week in December at that central location.
